In case you missed it, here is Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s opening monologue from last night’s 2013 Golden Globe Awards, or as I like to call it, basically, the best thing that has ever happened on the Golden Globe Awards. Out of the entire night, this 7 minute and 25 second monologue is easily the only thing I can say was worth watching (except for the other fleeting snippets when Amy and Tina took the stage). Apparently, all of Hollywood takes itself way too seriously, but thankfully, Tina and Amy not only know how to write and deliver a good joke, they know how to take one too. Watch below!

David Bowie and His Many Faces: Iconic Style Through the Years.

With a new single out, an album dropping in March and rumors of a new tour floating around the interwebs, I’ve got David Bowie on the brain! I grew up in the late 1980′s and 1990′s, but I had three older siblings. So, my musical education followed a different path than that of my peers, and when everyone else was listening to the likes of Mariah Carey and New Kids On The Block and eventually Britney Spears and N’Sync, I couldn’t get enough of folks like Pink Floyd, The Who, The Beatles, Queen and of course, David Bowie.

Bowie and his music were essentially above reproach in our household and in middle school and high school, I fell in love with classics like “Let’s Dance“, “Space Oddity“, “The Jean Genie“, and my personal favorite “Moonage Daydream“. Now, my love of Bowie may be primarily centered around the 1970′s, but he has consistently released new work over the past few decades. As such, Bowie has remained an influential and iconic force in the music industry through his vision, fashion and music. All these musings got me thinking about the many, many looks this man has tried out over the years. Some of them were really out there, some of them were more conservative, but all of them, in my opinion, were awesome! 1973 Bowie, the Aladdin Sane moment

When I think Bowie, I inevitably picture this image first. Pure androgynous make-up wearing coiffed hair genius.

1986 Bowie, i.e. Starring in Cult Classic Labyrinth.

’86 was the year I was born. So, I have a special attachment to this film and Bowie’s spectacularly untamed mullet.

1993 Bowie, Things Get Dapper.

For a brief moment in the 1990′s Bowie went with this dapper retro look that looks fabulous on him, and I love it.

Under the new policy, Facebook claims the perpetual right to license all public Instagram photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world’s largest stock photo agency.

It’s a bait and switch. Facebook purchased an existing body of online content with an extensive userbase, and is now changing the very nature of the product hoping the fallout of users isn’t crippling. I had other frustrations with the service, but this sealed the deal. I do believe I will be phasing out of personal use of Facebook as well since these policy changes will most likely carry over in my opinion.

The truth is they’re probably trying to keep commercials like this Taco Bell one from becoming a lawsuit, however, changing the TOS in such a drastic way SHOULD give users a cause to reconsider using the service. That’s the whole idea behind the TOS… to give users the opportunity to make an informed decision about what they are agreeing to when they decide to post their content online.

Now I personally don’t believe in all this end of the world hooplah, but I figure it’s better to be safe than sorry. #wastenot #cheers

Perhaps the lesson in all of this is that the Terms of Service agreement on ANY app or online service you sign up for are nothing to be trifled with or overlooked. I actually started clearing out my account when relatives discovered the service and followed me… then I found there was no way to take away their permission to see all my booze and date photos without blocking them like a spammer. I even switched my account to private, but you still don’t get the option to disallow. Guess I should have taken my lesson from Kyle and the South Park crew… ALWAYS make sure you read your Terms of Service AND understand the privacy options (or lack of) of a service BEFORE you start posting to it.

Top On Pop: SNL Touchingly Forgoes Usual Monologue to Pay Tribute to Newtown Victims.

SNL’s tribute to the Newtown, CT victims, a children’s choir solemnly singing “Silent Night” in lieu of their normally scheduled opening monologue is touching and appropriate.

• On a much less appropriate note, people with no expertise in media studies (actors/directors/etc.) shared their opinion on the Newtown shooting and its relationship to the media. Actor Christoph Waltz weirdly and inaccurately differentiated between “the media” and “the story teller“, and actor Josh Brolin made a gross generalization about movie violence, “There are many different factors, there’s no one reason…There’s always been violence in movies and there always will be violence in movies.” Jamie Foxx, at least, made a more reasonable (though still unsupported) claim, “We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn’t have a sort of influence. It does.” None of this is helpful.

• Hillary Duff made some logical and fair observations about child birth and raising a family and People Magazine still somehow managed to make it about baby weight.

• I have never before been so ready for it to be summer already in my life. RE: New Star Trek Into The Darkness Trailer.

• Nathan Fillion is charming, handsome, and smirky and will awesomely host the 2013 Writers Guild Awards. Yes, please.

• According to US Weekly: “Miles Cyrus Grabs Crotch at VH1 Divas Concert” but according to HuffPo: “Miley Cyrus Flaunts Her Abs”. Take your pick.

• The highly anticipated fantasy epic, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, (or pre-epic, I guess…since it leads up to LOTR) broke some box office records. Well, done, hobbits, dwarves, wizards and elves, well done.

• Channing Tatum and wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum are prepping to give birth to one of the world’s most attractive humans (Or, let’s be honest, it could go the other way too.)

• Kelly Clarkson is engaged! (To Reba McEntire’s stepson no less!)

• Here is your daily “OH GAWD NO” Moment: Haylor. In timeline format.

From the girl on the left that maybe doesn’t know where she is, to the overly excited mid-sentence girl on the right, to Harry Styles creeptacular stare, to the one girl that actually figured out someone was taking a picture, there is a whole lot of mess going on in this photo. Recently snapped at some random party 1/5 of One Direction attended, Styles apparently suggested someone take off their Minnie Mouse costume and also washed some dishes. Britney Spears In New Will.I.AM “Scream and Shout” Video: What’s With The Accent?

Just a couple weeks ago, Black Eyed Peas rapper gone solo, Will.I.AM debuted the new video for his most recent party in the club anthem, “Scream and Shout” featuring none other than Britney Spears (Bitch). There isn’t really anything about this song or its video that can differentiate it from any of the other tracks we’re hearing on the Top 40 stations. It has a generic but (of course) mercilessly catchy and addictive beat and meaningless and neutral lyrics. The video full of eclectic, futuristic hipster costume pieces, vague imagery and overused choreography, doesn’t do a whole lot to improve the track. So, you might wonder, what the heck is there to talk about?

Well, there is just one really weird detail that is bugging me. For part of the song Britney feigns a British accent, and what I want to know to know is whyyyy? I know it’s probably asking a lot from this song and the artists behind it to even bother asking why, but it just seems like such a pointless artifice. It doesn’t really add anything to anything, except to cause the listener (or at a minimum me…) to wonder how it was decided that the accent should be there, who decided it was a good idea and why no one bothered to cut it out. Maybe they were all high and thought it was ba-rilliant? Maybe? We all know Spears has a southern Louisiana accent, so seriously, what gives?

This small detail seems to me to be indicative of an ongoing trend in pop music, especially the Top 40 hits (I’m looking at you Katy Perry, Rhianna, Chris Brown, etc.), where the point and purpose of music is to be generic and to sell. It doesn’t carry any great addition to our culture except to broadcast the decline of it. You might think I’m being dramatic, but there is so much really amazing music and some extraordinarily talented people out there making quality music that is not only good but has something to contribute in the larger sense. Those folks are the ones that should be in the Top 40, not someone like Spears who is making and remaking different (not that different) versions of the same songs she was when she was a teen.

I am aware that this is neither a new or subtle argument to make. It’s just something about the Britney Spears + British accent = interesting song formula in this track that particularly annoys me. So, I’m sounding off about it. Listen below, and let me know what you think.

Mad Props Go Out To Anne Hathaway and Her Dignified Response to An Undignified and Wholly Unnecessary Spectacle.

In the latest example of why the paparazzi are the scum of the earth, one such “photographer” snapped a shot of Anne Hathaway exiting her limo at the NYC premiere of her current film, Les Misérables, and unwittingly (or most likely totally on purpose…perv!), took a photo of Hathaway’s lady business sans panties. Since the photog/slimeball snagged said photo, the pic has gone viral, and somehow become the topic of discussion on morning news shows, likeThe Today Show on which Hathaway was interviewed this morning.

In a gallant move, Anne spoke openly about the recent hullabaloo in what might be the most dignified way to possibility discuss a pic of one’s naked crotch circulating the gossip rags and interwebs. Not only does she keep her composure, but also makes a very insightful and logical observation about the state of our entertainment culture and our treatment of other humans.

So, Mad Props to Anne Hathaway For…

• 1) Not apologizing except for a sarcastic “Sorry about that.“! This is not something she should be sorry for, and I’m very glad she didn’t try to say anything along those lines. Hey, guess what, sometimes people don’t wear underwear. It can be uncomfortable. Get. Over. It. World.

• 2) Taking this gross and embarrassing debacle (embarrassing for the people who helped make this pic viral and treated it like it was important…not embarrassing to Anne.), and using it to constructively point out a major issue in our entertainment culture.

• 3) Not punching Matt Lauer in the face for practically leering at her, opening with the cringe inducing “I’ve seen a lot of you lately“, and for acting like her response to his gross questions was somehow evading the issue. Seriously, Matt, grow up already you ridiculous man-child.

Daniel Kim Sums Up The Year In Pop with His Impressive Mashup, Pop Danthology 2012.

Were you looking for a recap of all the Top Pop Songs from 2012? Well, thanks to Daniel Kim, you’re in luck! Last week the talented Kim published his downright impressive video mashup of some of 2012′s most popular songs. Besides being straight up cool (and an improvement on most of these songs), this mashup actually highlighted a couple things for me.

What We Can Learn from the Danthology:

• 1) Most of the pop songs that get radio play are shockingly similar…musically. I was obviously aware that there was a sad lack of diversity, but this showcases just how little diversity there really is (or isn’t…).

• 2) Based on these songs all anyone thinks about is love, the lack of love, partying and being young. I think we might be missing some of the more important issues.

• 3) PSY has better dance skills than Rhianna…unfortunate.

LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian Engage In The Pettiest of Pettiness with Eddie’s Ex.

Back in the day when LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian outed themselves and their Lifetime induced extramarital affair, I was actually on this duo’s side. Was it crappy that they cheated? Absolutely. Did it suck that it all had to come out publicly? Yes. Could things have been handled better? No doubt. But you know what? Love is messy and complicated and not always rainbows and ponies, and I’m sure that despite their hot, sweaty cheater sex, it was a difficult time for them too…on some level.

But now, these two have got me face palming it left and right! On the heels of LeAnn’s heartfelt and tear-filled interview with Katie Couric, the re-launch of her fan website, and the promise of new and glorious music from the country songtress, this duo have stooped to the level of middle school student drama via the Twittah. Something about kids, someone did something, blah, blah, blah…basically, they made the gross mistake of name calling in a petty fight with Cibrian’s understandably bitter (but seriously, get over it now.) ex, Brandi Glanville. The only people I feel sorry for right now, are the kids because they have to deal with the “adults” embarrassing themselves.

All you guys, all three of you…Get. Your. Shit. Together. And for god’s sake, do something productive with your celebrity status. Thanks.
